 POSITION SUMMARY
This position is responsible for performing specialized work involving assistance with the installation, maintenance and diagnostics of electrical/electronic traffic control devices and the associated control equipment including traffic signals, signs, and pavement markings.

This position reports to the Traffic Supervisor and will assist in maintaining all traffic control equipment on both county and state maintained routes within the County.

Physical demands require working outside where there is potential for exposure to inclement weather conditions and vehicular traffic in and around roadways. The incumbent may be exposed to noise, dirt, dust, machinery and electrical components. The position requires sitting and riding for lengths of time in a motor vehicle, as well as working with live electrical components and working from elevated buckets and platforms.

Contacts over the phone or in meetings with individuals representing the following organizations may include, but are not limited to the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT), Columbia County Sheriff's Office, Columbia County Board of Education, Columbia County government interdepartmental staff, Columbia County government departmental staff, city/county elected officials, contracting companies, and utility companies.

High school diploma or GED required. Supplemental vocational/technical training in electrical or electronics or experience in traffic control systems, traffic safety and/or training involving traffic control systems, traffic safety, or general construction trades desired. Must be able to receive valid IMSA Work Zone certification and IMSA Level I Traffic Signal certification after twelve (12) months of employment and possess or have ability to obtain a Georgia Commercial Driver’s License.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES
Assists with the installation, operation and maintenance of traffic signals and associated control equipment on both county and state maintained routes within the County.

Assist with diagnosing malfunctions in traffic signal control devices.

Repairs and replaces traffic signal lamps, lenses, and other associated miscellaneous hardware.

Places and maintains temporary traffic control devices in and along roadways in/around work sites.

Assists in performing maintenance test on equipment.

Assists in evaluating and setting functions on equipment as specified.

Assists with performing preventive maintenance of all equipment, including cleaning, replacement and performing adjustments as necessary.

Operates bucket trucks and other equipment such as pickups, trenchers, line locaters, hand tools and additional test equipment as required.

Operates electronic diagnostics equipment to facilitate necessary repairs of field equipment.

Prepares or completes various forms, reports, correspondence, maintenance records, or other documents as required.

Requires availability for after normal business hour call out in case of emergencies.

Responds to complaints from the general public.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of county policies and procedures.

Knowledge of or ability to learn operation and maintenance of electrical/electronic traffic control devices.

Knowledge of or ability to learn diagnostic procedures in relation to electrical/electronic traffic control devices.

Knowledge of or ability to learn the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD).

Ability to learn to efficiently operate an aerial bucket truck.

Skill in oral and written communication.

DESIRABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
High school diploma or GED required. Supplemental vocational/technical training in electrical or electronics or experience in traffic control systems, traffic safety and/or training involving traffic control systems, traffic safety, or general construction trades desired. Must be able to receive valid IMSA Work Zone certification and IMSA Level I Traffic Signal certification after twelve (12) months of employment and possess or have ability to obtain a Georgia Commercial Driver’s License.
