Columbia County Animal Services would like to encourage all livestock owners in the county to voluntarily register their livestock with the Animal Services Department. Doing so can save you a lot of time and money for several reasons.

The Animal Services  Department keeps a database of all livestock owners in Columbia County and the livestock they own. When Animal Services receives a complaint of livestock being loose in either someone’s yard or in the highway we first try to locate the owner via our livestock database to let them know we had a complaint and to see if they can put the animals up. Unfortunately, not all livestock owners are listed in our database so finding an owner can be very difficult.

Additionally, in the event of a natural disaster, the Columbia County Animal Services Department can utilize this information to find the owners of livestock who may have escaped through damaged fencing, saving you a lot of time and worry.

Also, if we have to impound livestock because an owner cannot be found, the owner is responsible for paying the impound and any boarding fees – which are set quite high due to the amount of manpower we must use to contain the animal and transport it back to the shelter. Many times also, we have to buy feed for the animals since we do not regularly have this at the shelter.

HorseIf no owner comes forward after the mandatory five day holding period, the animal can be adopted or auctioned off. We know that no citizen wants to lose their investment this way but the county has no other option after it has been held for five days.

To protect your investment and to expedite the return of your animal, please contact the Columbia County Animal Services Department and give them the following information so that it can be added to the database:

    · Your Name

· Your Address

· Any phone numbers that we can contact you on

· Address of where the livestock is located

· What livestock is present and descriptions

You can e-mail this information to Animal Services or call us at 706-541-4077.

And remember, there is no charge for this service!
