The Building Standards Department is committed to serving and protecting the public's health, safety, and general welfare and to providing the citizens and builders of Columbia County with competent, consistent, courteous and timely inspection services.  Our certified inspectors are continually updating their credentials to provide the citizens and contractors of Columbia County with quality daily inspections.

In order to maintain the state environmental requirements for land disturbance and erosion and sediment controls throughout a construction project and beyond, Columbia County also has a staff of residential erosion and sediment control inspectors.  They are under the supervision of the Environmental Compliance Department.  

To schedule inspections please call the inspection request telephone line at 706-447-7733 or email at inspections@columbiacountyga.gov by 4:30 p.m. the weekday day before you need the inspection.  You must provide the permit number, physical address, type of inspection needed and your contact information.  We monitor this phone line and email address through out the day.  You will receive an email confirmation for requests sent to the email account.  Messages left on the phone line will not receive a confirmation. 

A permit is required for:
New construction
Additions
Roofing
Major renovations
Swimming pools
Decks
Sheds over 200 square feet.
Signs
Sprinkler installations
Major repairs
Siding and windows
Demolition

Trade permits required for:
All new installations and certain repair work.
Service changes


A permit is not required for:
Sidewalks and driveways
Painting, wallpapering, tiling, carpeting, cabinets, counter tops and similar finish work
Fences less than 7 feet
Retaining walls less than 3 feet

Who can obtain a permit?
Registered general contractors
Trade contractors
